Houthi Report: US Airstrikes on Yemeni Oil Port Result in 20 Fatalities

U.S. airstrikes have targeted the Ras Isa oil port in Yemen, resulting in the deaths of 20 individuals and injuries to 50 others. The port is controlled by the Houthi rebels, and the strikes mark one of the most significant death tolls in a campaign initiated under President Donald Trump. This campaign, which has included hundreds of strikes since mid-March, aims to disrupt the activities of the Iran-backed Houthi militants, according to the U.S. military’s Central Command.

Graphic footage broadcasted by the Houthis’ al-Masirah satellite channel displayed the aftermath of the attack, highlighting the devastation and loss of life. The report claimed that paramedics and civilian workers were among those killed in the massive explosion and ensuing fires. Central Command stated that the action aimed to eliminate a crucial fuel source for the Houthis and to cut off illegal revenue streams that have supported their regional terrorism for over a decade. The statement emphasized that the operation was not intended to harm Yemeni civilians but rather to aid those wishing to escape Houthi control.

The U.S. State Department had previously issued a warning on April 9 regarding oil shipments to Yemen, indicating that any support to foreign terrorist organizations like the Houthis would not be tolerated. This includes activities such as offloading ships and provisioning oil at ports under Houthi control.

The strikes are part of a broader campaign launched by the U.S. under President Trump, which appears more extensive than efforts under former President Joe Biden. The current administration has expanded its targets from launch sites to include high-ranking personnel and urban areas. This intensified operation began after threats from the rebels to target ships labeled as “Israeli,” following Israel’s blockade of aid entering the Gaza Strip. The vague definition of “Israeli” ships has led to numerous vessels being at risk.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched attacks on over 100 merchant vessels, sinking two and resulting in the deaths of four sailors. They have also unsuccessfully targeted American warships. The ongoing U.S. campaign is also linked to efforts to pressure Iran over its advancing nuclear program, signaling continued military actions against the Houthis.
