Jason A. Reding Quiñones was sworn in Wednesday as the new United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, becoming the first U.S. Attorney confirmed during the second administration of President Donald J. Trump. Following his nomination by President Trump and confirmation by the Senate, Reding Quiñones took the oath of office administered by Attorney General Pam Bondi. He will now lead one of the nation’s largest and busiest federal prosecutor’s offices.
In his new role, Reding Quiñones will oversee a vast jurisdiction responsible for prosecuting federal crimes and representing the U.S. in civil litigation. The Southern District of Florida is the third-largest U.S. Attorney’s Office in the country, covering nine counties including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, and serving millions of residents from Key West to Sebastian.
“As the son of a Cuban political refugee and a proud Miami native, I am deeply honored by the trust and confidence that President Trump, Attorney General Bondi, and the United States Senate have placed in me,” said Reding Quiñones. “I will work tirelessly to protect the American people, restore impartial justice, and defend the rule of law without fear or favor.”
A Career in Law and National Security
Reding Quiñones brings a diverse background in law, judiciary, and military service to the position. Prior to his appointment, he served as a state court trial judge in Miami-Dade County, where he presided over civil and criminal domestic violence cases. His experience also includes high-level roles within the U.S. Department of Justice.
He previously served as a national security official in the department’s National Security Division, with a focus on counterterrorism. His prosecutorial experience includes tenures as a federal prosecutor in both the Southern District of Florida, the office he now leads, and the Eastern District of Virginia.
Decorated Military Veteran
A decorated veteran with 22 years of service in the U.S. military, Reding Quiñones has held numerous positions in both the United States Army and the United States Air Force. His roles have included cavalry scout, infantry officer, logistics officer, and judge advocate, which is a military lawyer. He continues his service as a reserve lieutenant colonel, providing legal counsel on national security and counterterrorism matters to the Commander of United States Central Command.
Transition and Path Forward
Reding Quiñones succeeds Hayden P. O’Byrne, a career prosecutor who had led the office in an acting capacity since January 2025. Expressing his respect for his predecessor, Reding Quiñones thanked O’Byrne for his service and leadership, stating he looks forward to “building on his successes.”
The new U.S. Attorney is a graduate of the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, and the Florida International University College of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor. His confirmation marks a key appointment for the Justice Department, filling a critical leadership role in a district known for handling complex financial fraud, drug trafficking, and national security cases.
