A family in Massachusetts is seeking answers from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after agents broke a vehicle window with a hammer to detain a man they claim had applied for asylum. According to the family’s attorney, the agents were not looking for Juan Francisco Méndez when they apprehended him in New Bedford while he was on his way to a dental appointment. The attorney stated that the agents initially indicated they were searching for someone else before removing Méndez and his wife from their vehicle.
Footage captured by Méndez’s wife, Marilú Domingo Ortiz, shows ICE agents breaking the vehicle’s window and restraining her. The family believes that Méndez is being held in a facility in Dover, New Hampshire. Upon arriving at the scene, the attorney observed Ortiz visibly upset and the vehicle’s broken window. The lawyer noted the drastic and violent measures taken were unprecedented in her 27 years of working in immigration law.
