Authorities are intensively searching for the suspect who fatally shot the head of a major U.S. health insurance firm in Manhattan, before fleeing into Central Park.
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was tragically killed on Wednesday morning in an incident that has been described by police as a targeted attack. He was walking to an investor conference at a Hilton Hotel when the suspect approached him from behind and discharged multiple gunshots, fatally wounding him.
Security footage captured the moments leading up to and following the attack, revealing the suspect’s calculated approach. The gunman, wearing a hooded jacket and mask, managed to clear a brief jam in his firearm before continuing to fire at Thompson. After the shooting, he fled on a bicycle heading into Central Park, evading an extensive police search involving drones, helicopters, and K-9 units.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the attack was not a random act of violence. The suspect reportedly lingered in the area before acting, indicating premeditated intent. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny noted the suspect’s apparent proficiency with firearms.
Authorities released multiple images of the suspect, some captured at a nearby coffee shop shortly before the incident. Despite a comprehensive manhunt, which included offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest, the suspect’s identity and location remain unknown.
Brian Thompson, a respected figure in the health care industry, had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and served as CEO for over three years.
