Lakers Celebrate Pat Riley with Star Plaza Statue

The Los Angeles Lakers announced plans to honor their former coach, Pat Riley, with a statue outside their downtown arena in Star Plaza. Riley’s contributions to the “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s, where he secured four championships, are deeply rooted in the franchise’s history.

Pat Riley’s career with the Lakers began as a player from 1970 to 1975 and transitioned into a broadcaster role before he became an assistant coach under Paul Westhead in 1979. By 1981, Riley took over as head coach, leading the Lakers through one of the NBA’s most dynamic periods. The team, guided by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, boasted a fast-paced, groundbreaking offense, achieving a 533-194 record (.733) in Riley’s tenure, including 102 playoff victories over nine seasons.

Jeanie Buss, Lakers owner, emphasized Riley’s influence, stating that his professionalism and dedication set a standard for coaching in the league. She recognized her father’s foresight in seeing Riley’s potential to transform talented players into a championship team, with the 1980s Lakers’ playing style remaining a blueprint for the organization.

The statue will make Riley the eighth Lakers figure commemorated in Star Plaza, joining legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant. Current coach JJ Redick remarked on Riley’s deserved recognition, noting his enduring impact on the game and the Lakers franchise. Redick is familiar with Riley’s prominence in the team’s history, having watched the Hulu documentary, “Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers.”

After his time with the Lakers, Riley went on to coach the New York Knicks before assuming the role of president and coach of the Miami Heat in 1995. His leadership brought the Heat a championship in 2006. Recently, Riley was honored by having the court named after him in Miami, demonstrating his lasting legacy in basketball.

At 79, Riley continues to be an influential figure in the NBA. His latest acknowledgment by the Lakers reflects his sustained influence on the sport, marking a legacy that spans decades and multiple teams.

The statue honoring Pat Riley is a testament to his significant impact on the Los Angeles Lakers and the broader basketball community. This permanent tribute at Star Plaza highlights a storied career that not only shaped a team but also left an indelible mark on the game itself.
