A man with a history of mental health issues and previous convictions was taken into custody outside UnitedHealthcare headquarters in Minnetonka, a suburb of Minneapolis. The 26-year-old faces charges in Hennepin County District Court, including two felony firearms counts and two felony counts of threatening violence. Due to a prior felony conviction for threats of violence, he was prohibited from possessing a firearm and ammunition. Additionally, he had two outstanding cases for violating restraining orders.
According to the complaint, the defendant contacted the FBI on Monday morning, stating he was in a company parking lot with a loaded weapon. Minnetonka police, aware of his mental health challenges and history of harassment, responded promptly and discovered him in a parked car. Following discussions with an FBI negotiator, he surrendered peacefully within the hour. Authorities confiscated a revolver and ammunition from the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed he had also called 911 that morning, threatening to shoot into the UnitedHealth building unless criminal charges against him were dismissed. He reportedly asked the dispatcher if they wanted an evacuation to be featured in the news. Despite the threats, both police and UnitedHealthcare officials noted that there were no indications of specific grievances against the company itself.
Security measures at the corporate campus have been heightened, especially following the recent shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City on December 4.
