As the new year approaches, solar storms could offer a celestial display across the northern United States.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has indicated that solar activity may lead to the appearance of the northern lights in the upper parts of the United States. The sun has emitted two bursts of plasma projected to reach Earth early this week, possibly triggering auroras visible in several states, including Alaska, Washington, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and the New England area. Parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Iowa, and New York might also catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

According to Shawn Dahl, a space weather forecaster at NOAA, the optimal viewing for the northern lights will be during the early hours of Tuesday while skies are still dark. This solar activity is a result of the sun nearing the peak phase of its 11-year cycle, a period characterized by heightened solar surges and frequent auroras. This active phase is expected to continue for at least another year, although the precise peak of solar activity will only be known months later.

The NOAA is also monitoring for potential minor disruptions in high-frequency radio communications, which can affect airlines and amateur radio operators. Historical context shows that in May, NOAA issued a severe geomagnetic storm warning, the most intense in over two decades, illuminating skies across much of the Northern Hemisphere. More recently, a strong solar storm in October brought unexpected auroras in regions like Germany, the United Kingdom, and even New York City.

For those eager to witness the northern lights, seeking out a spot with clear, dark skies away from urban light pollution is recommended. Utilizing a smartphone camera might even capture faint aurora displays invisible to the naked eye. Updated forecasts about this event can be accessed through NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center or by using an aurora forecasting app to maximize viewing opportunities.

With solar storms anticipated to bring northern lights visible across parts of the United States, residents are encouraged to take advantage of this natural phenomenon and prepare for potential minor disruptions to radio services. As the sun remains active, similar displays might continue, offering continued opportunities for skywatchers.
