Cucumbers distributed by SunFed Produce and eggs sold at select retail stores have been recalled over salmonella concerns, according to recent announcements from the Food and Drug Administration.
SunFed Produce, operating from Arizona, has recalled their cucumbers distributed between October 12 and November 26. These cucumbers have reached consumers in 13 U.S. states, including Alaska, Arizona, and Florida. The recall was initiated as a precautionary measure due to potential salmonella contamination, although no related illnesses have been reported at this time. SunFed has emphasized their commitment to food safety, working closely with authorities to trace the source of the issue. Craig Slate, SunFed’s president, stated, ‘”As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers. We are working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to determine the possible cause.” People who purchased cucumbers during this period are urged to confirm with their point of purchase whether their products are affected.
In parallel, Handsome Brook Farms has voluntarily recalled nearly 11,000 cartons of organic eggs, marketed under the Kirkland Signature brand name, following the discovery that eggs not intended for retail distribution were mistakenly packaged for retail sale. These eggs were available at stores in Alabama, North Carolina, and other southeastern states since November 22. The specific products in question bear the UPC 9661910680, labeled with the Julian code 327 and a Use By Date of January 5, 2025. Much like with the cucumbers, no illnesses have been linked to these eggs so far. Consumers who have purchased these eggs should discontinue use and either dispose of them or return them to Costco for a refund.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can manifest symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically appearing six hours to six days after consumption. While most individuals recover without treatment within a week, certain groups, including young children and older adults, are at a higher risk of severe illness. Previous outbreaks have illustrated the challenges of controlling such infections, as evidenced by a separate incident over the summer that affected 450 cucumber consumers in the U.S.
Both SunFed and Handsome Brook Farms are actively engaging with public health authorities to ensure consumer safety following these recalls. While no adverse health effects have been reported thus far, it remains crucial for consumers to adhere to the recall guidelines to prevent potential health risks.
