Authorities in New Orleans have arrested a second employee from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office in connection to an alleged scheme to defraud the agency.
Toya Robertson, aged 51, faces multiple felony charges, including theft over $25,000, monetary instrument abuse, and obstruction of justice. According to the sheriff’s office, she was implicated in a fraudulent scheme to misappropriate over $90,000 from the agency.
This arrest follows closely on the heels of the detention of Labrina Carey Lackey, a 57-year-old alleged to be the mastermind behind the scheme. Lackey was also charged with orchestrating the misallocation of funds from the Inmate Trust Fund. The operation involved the falsification of journal entries and unauthorized check disbursements from former inmates’ accounts. This was reportedly done to mask cash discrepancies originating at the bond window deposits.
Robertson, who had been employed with the sheriff’s office since January 2002, was terminated before her arrest. The investigation is still active, and the sheriff’s office has yet to confirm whether more arrests will be made.
The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to probe this intricate case of public fund mismanagement, ensuring all responsible parties are held accountable. The detailed investigation underscores the office’s commitment to transparency and accountability in public service operations.
The arrest of Toya Robertson highlights the ongoing efforts to address financial mismanagement within the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. As the investigation unfolds, the agency remains focused on restoring integrity and trust.
