In a dramatic turn of events, authorities responded to a deadly incident involving a man suspected of three murders in central Illinois. The suspect met a fatal end after a confrontation with law enforcement in a suburb of Chicago late Wednesday night.
John Lyons, aged 24, of Westchester, Illinois, was identified as the suspect in the tragic deaths of three individuals in Mahomet, a location roughly 120 miles southwest of Chicago. According to local police, Lyons allegedly fatally shot the victims late Wednesday.
The sequence of events began when officers in Berwyn, a suburb near Chicago, received reports of a man brandishing a firearm at approximately 11:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, Lyons fled and forcibly entered a residence, where he shot and killed two dogs, as detailed by the authorities.
Subsequently, Lyons attempted to evade police by fleeing into a neighboring yard. Despite commands to halt, he discharged his weapon towards the responding officers, prompting them to return fire and ultimately kill him on the scene.
The victims from the Mahomet shootings were identified by Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer. Sara E. Mason, aged 26, was declared deceased at the scene. The other two individuals, Janis Mason, 61, and Caleb Mason, 23, succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital, as reported by WCIO-TV.
