Trump Repurposes COVID Information Site to Promote Lab Leak Theory

The federal website previously dedicated to disseminating information on COVID-19 vaccines, testing, and treatment has undergone a significant transformation. It now focuses on supporting the theory that the pandemic originated from a lab leak. The revamped covid.gov site displays an image of President Donald Trump alongside the words “lab” and “leak” under a White House banner. The site highlights the presence of a research lab in Wuhan, China, known for conducting virus research with reportedly inadequate biosafety levels, in the city where the coronavirus initially spread.

The website also criticizes Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, for allegedly promoting a narrative that COVID-19 originated naturally. The origins of the virus remain unproven, with scientific consensus still divided on whether it emerged from animal transmission or a laboratory incident. A 2023 U.S. intelligence analysis concluded that there is insufficient evidence to substantiate either hypothesis.

While it is typical for government websites to undergo changes with new administrations, the recent modifications have been notably extensive. Public health data, particularly information concerning transgender individuals, was removed. Additionally, the Pentagon eliminated photographs perceived to celebrate diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The previous version of covid.gov offered guidance on ordering free COVID-19 tests and staying updated with vaccinations, advising that vaccines are the most effective protection for individuals and their families. It also provided instructions on seeking immediate treatment for COVID-19 and included resources on long COVID.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 325 Americans have died from COVID-19 each week over the past month. As of early April, fewer than 25% of adults in the U.S. have received an updated COVID vaccine. Globally, millions continue to suffer from long COVID, experiencing a range of symptoms such as fatigue and cognitive issues.
