Tragedy struck during a popular second-line parade in New Orleans when two separate shootings left two people dead and ten injured on Sunday, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
The incidents occurred during the vibrant second-line parade, a community-driven event often accompanied by a brass band. Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick reported that the first shooting erupted at about 3:40 p.m., despite increased police presence at the event. During this shooting, gunfire from an involved vehicle injured nine individuals, all of whom have been hospitalized and are currently alive. Approximately 45 minutes later, a second shooting took place on a bridge where no vehicles were permitted at the time. This shooting resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left another in extremely critical condition. Superintendent Kirkpatrick indicated that this incident occurred within the crowd, heightening the chaos and fear among parade-goers.
Law enforcement officials have yet to determine whether the two incidents are linked, given their occurrence within a 45-minute interval. Governor Jeff Landry described the events as a ‘tragic scene in the St. Roch neighborhood’ and expressed gratitude towards first responders while calling for an end to the violence. Similarly, Attorney General Liz Murrill expressed her sorrow for the victims and emphasized the need for justice.
