Greg Gumbel, a longstanding figure in sports broadcasting, has passed away at 78 after battling cancer, as confirmed by his family to CBS Sports.
Gumbel’s distinctive voice was synonymous with NFL coverage on both CBS and NBC for over three decades. His career spanned major sporting events, including the Olympics and the March Madness tournaments. ‘It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel,’ his family stated, noting his peaceful passing surrounded by love. His approach to his illness, characterized by stoicism and positivity, reflected the grace he brought to his professional life.
David Berson, President and CEO of CBS Sports, expressed deep sorrow over Gumbel’s passing, describing him as a gentleman respected across the television industry. His career at CBS was highlighted by hosting ‘The NFL Today’ and being the network’s lead announcer. Additionally, Gumbel played a pivotal role in CBS’s March Madness coverage. Recently, he signed a contract extension with CBS to continue college basketball hosting while stepping back from NFL duties.
Greg Gumbel made history in 2001 by calling the play-by-play for Super Bowl XXXV, becoming the first Black announcer to do so for a major U.S. sports championship. His contribution to sports broadcasting extended beyond football, having covered the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and Major League Baseball during CBS’s broadcasting tenure. His work left a lasting impact in football and basketball, which were his primary realms.
His longtime colleague, Jim Nantz, described Gumbel as ‘broadcasting royalty’ and highlighted their nearly 35-year working relationship. Meanwhile, tributes poured in on social media, including from Bruce Beck, a former colleague, who praised Gumbel’s professionalism and collegial nature.
Gumbel’s significant roles at CBS included leading NFL game broadcasts and covering various sports, a testament to his versatility and expertise. His brother, Bryant Gumbel, who is also a prominent figure in broadcasting, survives him.
