The electoral landscape in Loudoun County strongly favors the Democrats. In the 2021 gubernatorial election, former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe garnered over 60% of the vote in these districts. Similarly, in past presidential elections, President Joe Biden received approximately 62% of the vote in Loudoun County in 2020, and Vice President Kamala Harris obtained about 57% in 2024. By contrast, voters in Senate District 10 have shown a preference for Republicans, having supported candidates like Donald Trump and Gov. Glenn Youngkin in previous elections. Notably, McGuire previously faced no opposition when running for this seat in 2023.
Currently, Democrats hold a slim majority in both the Virginia state Senate and House of Delegates. A Republican victory in McGuire’s Senate seat, coupled with potential Democratic losses in Loudoun County, could shift control in the state Senate to the Republicans. Alternatively, it may necessitate a power-sharing arrangement in the House of Delegates, a chamber Democrats regained control of after the 2023 elections.
