Volusia Democrats Elect New Leadership Following Significant Losses

After a series of setbacks, Volusia County Democrats have appointed new leaders in an effort to regain political ground.

Volusia County Democrats have undergone significant changes following a sweeping defeat in the 2024 elections. The party lost every county, state, and federal race, prompting a thorough reorganization of its leadership team. Nick Sakhnovsky of Daytona Beach was elected as the new chair, succeeding Jewel Dickson, who did not seek re-election. Despite stepping back from her role, Dickson will continue her involvement as a precinct committeewoman.

Sakhnovsky, with only five years in Daytona Beach, has already shown his commitment by serving as the rules chair and as a delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention. His quick establishment of a club in Margaritaville exemplifies his proactive approach. “He will do a good job,” Dickson commented, expressing confidence in Sakhnovsky’s ability to lead.

Assisting Sakhnovsky will be Karen Francis as vice chair, Charleen Smith as secretary, and Richard Thripp as treasurer. The announcement was made on the party’s Facebook page, indicating an openness to engage with the community through social media. The leadership team also includes a diverse group of Florida Democratic Party executive committee members: Susanne Raines, Danny Fuqua, Gavin Cox, Josephine Pope, Ginger Jabour, and Theresa Jerinsky. Notably, Volusia Democrats have expanded their state committee representation, increasing from two to seven members.

The new leadership embodies a mix of ages, races, and backgrounds, which could bring fresh perspectives and strategies to the party’s efforts. While Sakhnovsky was unavailable for immediate comment, the party’s active use of social media platforms like Facebook suggests a strategic move to increase engagement and transparency.

With new leadership in place, Volusia Democrats are poised to strategize and potentially reclaim their influence in future elections.
