Brushfire Prompts Evacuations Near Pepperdine University in Malibu

Early Tuesday, a significant brushfire erupted in Malibu, California, posing a direct threat to the surroundings of Pepperdine University. The fire, identified as the Franklin Fire, rapidly necessitated the evacuation of the area due to its proximity to university structures and residences.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department engaged the blaze, which had already engulfed approximately 100 acres. Efforts were focused on safeguarding endangered structures, as reported by KTLA-TV.

The Franklin Fire’s rapid advance was worsened by gusty winds, common during Southern California’s Santa Ana winds, which impeded the firefighters’ efforts. These winds, forecasted by the National Weather Service, were expected to intensify, reaching up to 65 mph, thereby heightening the risk of fire spread.

As a precaution, Pepperdine University canceled classes and finals, implementing a shelter-in-place order. Fire engines were stationed on the campus, and helicopters were employed to douse the flames, utilizing water from lakes located in the school’s Alumni Park.

The power supply for tens of thousands of residents was preemptively cut off by utilities, seeking to reduce the chance of fires sparked by wind-damaged power lines.

Authorities issued a mandatory evacuation directive for those residing east of Malibu Canyon Road and south of Piuma Road. However, the exact number of evacuees was not immediately clear.

The Weather Service’s red flag warning underscored the severity of the situation, especially under the rare ‘particularly dangerous situation’ designation, affecting Los Angeles and Ventura counties. This highlights the potential for extreme fire behavior under the current conditions.

Residents in Malibu, a community of roughly 10,000 people, were advised to stay alert to further instructions as the Franklin Fire burned fiercely close to populated areas.

The Franklin Fire near Malibu’s Pepperdine University underscores the ever-present vulnerability of the region to wildfires, especially under Santa Ana wind conditions. As firefighters labor to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of the community, residents are reminded of the importance of heeding evacuation orders and staying informed through official channels during such emergencies.
