A formidable storm system is set to develop and intensify off the Northwest coast, bringing with it a significant atmospheric river of moisture that is expected to affect parts of the West Coast through the week.
Meteorologists have identified that a low-pressure system will undergo a rapid intensification process known as bombogenesis over the northern Pacific. This process, where pressure drops by 24 or more millibars within a day, transforms the storm into a ‘bomb cyclone’. Such rapid intensification indicates potential for severe impacts, including heavy precipitation and strong winds.
The atmospheric river will channel substantial moisture into Northern California and Oregon, leading to heavy rains from Tuesday through Friday, potentially extending into Saturday. Northern California, particularly areas north of the Bay Area, may experience rainfall totals ranging from 8 to 15 inches. In contrast, other regions in Oregon and Washington could see 1 to 5 inches of rain, concentrated in coastal and foothill areas.
These heavy rains elevate the risk of flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage and along creeks and rivers. Moreover, mudslides and rock slides are possible, particularly in regions scarred by recent wildfires.
The storm will not only bring rain but also significant snowfall in elevated areas, with the Cascades and the Siskiyou Mountains anticipating heavy snow accumulations. Snow levels, initially low, are expected to rise as the week progresses, affecting transportation through key mountain passes like Washington’s Snoqualmie Pass and California’s Siskiyou Pass.
Adding to these challenges, strong winds are forecasted. Coastal areas in Northern California and Oregon may experience gusts exceeding 60 to 70 mph, while inland regions could also feel these powerful winds. Such conditions may lead to power outages and fallen trees, impacting communities and infrastructure.
While peak impacts of this storm are expected to last until midweek, gusty winds and precipitation will persist in some form through the weekend.
