In an intriguing tale of elusiveness, a scruffy mutt named Scrim has become the talk of New Orleans as he continues to evade capture.
The 17-pound terrier mix has become somewhat of a folk hero, outsmarting a group of determined citizens equipped with night-vision binoculars, nets, and a tranquilizer rifle. Since his breakout from a shelter, Scrim has inspired a dedicated following, even spawning tattoos, T-shirts, and a ballad in his honor, highlighting the fascination surrounding his escapades.
His backstory adds to his allure. Rescued from a semi-feral existence at a trailer park, Scrim was adopted from a shelter but managed to break free in April. He became cornered in October but soon leapt out of a second-story window, an event caught on a now-viral video, allowing him to roam free once again.
Leading the efforts to recapture Scrim is Michelle Cheramie, founder of Zeus’ Rescues in New Orleans. Her passion for animal rescue was ignited after losing everything to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Now, Cheramie dedicates herself to rescuing animals, averaging 600 cat and dog adoptions yearly through her nonprofit. Despite investing thousands of dollars in tracking equipment and enlisting numerous volunteers, Scrim remains elusive.
The search for Scrim has galvanized a diverse group of New Orleans residents. Writer David W. Brown manages a crowd-sourced Google Map tracking Scrim’s sightings, remarking on how this quest brings the community together. Meanwhile, volunteer Tammy Murray has become deeply involved, using a Vespa scooter to covertly track Scrim after he became familiar with the sound of her van.
Scrim’s story has captured the media’s attention and sparked debates about animal freedom, with some advocating for his continued independence. However, Cheramie and her team stress the dangers of city life for a dog, urging for Scrim’s safety in a secure environment. Previously captured in October, Scrim was found injured with matted fur and missing teeth. Despite appearing calm indoors, he chewed through a screen to escape once more.
Now, Cheramie and her team are reassessing the best environment for Scrim. They envision a sanctuary where he can roam safely with other dogs. Each day, volunteers continue their search, fueled by the hope of providing Scrim a better life.
The plight of Scrim has not only captivated a city but also highlighted the dedication and compassion of those striving to ensure his safety. As the search continues, it serves as a reminder of the strong bond between community and the animals amongst them.
