Forty monkeys have broken free from a research facility in South Carolina, causing quite a stir among the local residents of Yemassee. These primates made their daring escape from the Alpha Genesis site on Wednesday night, prompting an immediate reaction from the authorities.
As soon as the monkeys took their freedom leap, police sprang into action, using thermal imaging cameras and setting traps in a bid to safely recapture the adventurous animals. The authorities are leaving no stone unturned, advising residents in the area to secure their homes by locking doors and windows, ensuring no furry intruders interrupt their peace.
Yemassee, a town about 50 miles west of Charleston, is now on high alert. Locals have been strictly instructed not to approach these clever escape artists. Instead, they should contact 911 immediately if they catch a glimpse of a monkey swinging by.
Alpha Genesis, the facility from which these monkeys fled, is known for its work with nonhuman primates, offering products and bio-research services. The facility spans over 100 acres, dedicated to quarantine, breeding, and research, and is involved in clinical trials, including those focused on brain disease treatments. They pride themselves on their high standards of animal care, but this isn’t the first time they’ve had some of their residents make a run for it.
In fact, this isn’t even the first escape incident at Alpha Genesis. Back in 2016, 19 monkeys managed to escape but were quickly rounded up six hours later. While the current escapees’ breed hasn’t been confirmed, it’s known that the facility houses both macaque and capuchin monkeys.
The local police took to Facebook, using the platform to spread their warnings and recommendations to the community. Meanwhile, Alpha Genesis finds itself at the center of attention, as the search for these runaway primates continues.
The unexpected breakout of these monkeys has certainly added a bit of excitement to the quiet town of Yemassee.
