In a unique twist to festive celebrations, Santa Claus has made a splashing entrance in Rio de Janeiro, taking to the waters of the AquaRio Marine Aquarium.
Starting on Saturday, Santa Claus will be visible underwater, swimming alongside sharks during daily fish feeding sessions, becoming a highlight of the city’s Christmas activities. This aquatic Santa, embodied by Felippe Luna, a 39-year-old senior animal handler at AquaRio, captivates both children and adults with his underwater antics.
The underwater Santa experience at AquaRio began as an inside joke among the staff. However, it quickly evolved into an annual tradition that delights visitors every holiday season. Dressed as Santa, Luna dives into the 924,602-gallon tank, performing his unique task of feeding marine life, including sharks, by hand.
The spectacle not only offers a memorable visual treat but also brings smiles to the faces of young spectators. Nine-year-old Guilherme Martins Matos remarked on the thrill of seeing Santa Claus at the aquarium, noting that the underwater experience far surpasses the usual mall encounters with Santa. “Imagine him underwater feeding the fish? It’s even cooler,” Guilherme expressed his excitement for the Associated Press.
Felippe Luna finds the role rewarding, especially when witnessing the awe and joy in the children’s eyes. “For the kids, seeing Santa Claus underwater is already incredible. And Santa feeding a shark by hand? That’s unforgettable,” Luna shared.
This extraordinary event is scheduled to continue daily at 1:30 p.m. until December 25th, promising a unique Christmas spectacle for all who visit AquaRio.
