Theft of ‘Nutcracker’ Props Threatens Michigan Ballet Performances

A significant setback has hit a suburban Detroit ballet company as its preparations for the upcoming ‘The Nutcracker’ performances are jeopardized due to a trailer filled with essential props being stolen.

The theft occurred on November 17, 2024, leaving the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company in a difficult situation as they gear up for this beloved holiday classic. The missing items, which include unique theatrical props like a 17-foot tall Christmas tree and a grandfather clock, are essential for the authenticity of the performance. According to June Smith, the artistic director, these items are custom-made for stage use and are irreplaceable for any other purpose.

‘The Nutcracker,’ a cherished ballet composed by Tchaikovsky, narrates the dream of a young girl who imagines a battle between the wicked Mouse King and the valiant Nutcracker. As the company’s 40th anniversary approaches, more than 80 students from 20 different dance studios have been diligently preparing for the show. The community, which has supported the ballet company for four decades, is being called upon to help replace the missing items in time for the performances scheduled for December 7-8.

The stolen trailer, described as being black and 24 feet long, is crucial for transporting these props. Despite the setback, there is a prevailing sense of optimism. Smith is hopeful that the local community, known for its longstanding support, will rally to overcome this challenge, emphasizing their confidence in finding a solution before the opening night.

The unfortunate theft of the ‘Nutcracker’ props has cast a shadow over the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company’s preparations. However, the commitment and resolve of the community and performers provide hope for a timely resolution.
