In a recent revelation, Elton John disclosed that he has been struggling with vision loss due to an infection, which has affected his ability to watch his new stage musical.
Elton John attended the opening night of his new musical, “The Devil Wears Prada,” in London. During the event, he addressed the audience, revealing that he has been unable to attend many previews due to his vision problems. “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” John shared.
Despite his visual impairment, John expressed his enjoyment of the production’s sound, stating, “So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight.” The musician had announced in September that the infection left him with only limited vision in one eye. On social media, he mentioned, “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”
John composed the score for “The Devil Wears Prada,” a musical adaptation of the 2006 film. The story centers around a young journalist navigating the competitive world of a fashion magazine. Vanessa Williams stars as Miranda Priestly, a character originally portrayed by Meryl Streep in the film.
The gala event served as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, attracting notable attendees like designer Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is believed to have inspired the character of Priestly. Wintour described the musical as “entertaining,” adding to the evening’s highlights.
Although Elton John faces significant challenges due to his vision loss, his passion and commitment to his work in the arts remain unwavering.
