French Rugby Players Cleared of Rape Charges in Argentina

In a significant development, a court in Argentina has acquitted French rugby players Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou of aggravated rape charges.

The charges against the two players were dismissed following a legal process in Mendoza, Argentina. Both Auradou and Jegou, aged 21, were accused of raping a 39-year-old woman in a hotel room shortly after their international rugby debuts against Argentina in July. The accused players consistently denied these allegations, maintaining that the sexual encounter was consensual.

During the court proceedings, their lawyer, Rafael Cuneo Libarona, conveyed to Reuters that the judge had acquitted the players, determining that the alleged act was not criminal. This sentiment was echoed by another legal representative, German Hnatow, who emphasized their belief in the innocence of the players, stating there was no criminal wrongdoing involved.

After being arrested, the players were detained for over a week and subsequently placed under house arrest. They were later permitted to travel to Buenos Aires pending the decision on their return to France. Once allowed home in September, both resumed playing for their respective clubs. Auradou participated in eight games for his club Pau, whereas Jegou played four matches for La Rochelle, including a notable performance in the Champions Cup victory over Bath.

The French Rugby Federation (FFR) expressed relief and satisfaction with the court’s decision, ensuring that both Auradou and Jegou can rejoin the national team. In a subsequent move to improve discipline among players, particularly after the Argentina tour, the FFR implemented a ban on alcohol during national team gatherings.

Meanwhile, it was noted that during the same tour, France’s full-back Melvyn Jaminet was suspended and fined for posting a racist video on social media, a separate matter further highlighting the team’s disciplinary issues.

The conclusion of this case marks a turning point for Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, who can now focus on their professional careers without the burden of ongoing legal challenges. Their eligibility to play for France again has been restored, signifying a fresh start. The French Rugby Federation’s response emphasizes the importance of maintaining discipline and integrity within the sport.
