During an informal gathering of NATO foreign ministers, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced Germany’s support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to increase the defense spending target of NATO member countries to 5% of their gross domestic product. This move follows a proposal reported by NATO chief Mark Rutte, suggesting members elevate defense spending to 3.5% of GDP while allocating an additional 1.5% to broader security-related issues. Wadephul indicated that this proposal was coordinated with the U.S. and would be a topic of discussion at the NATO foreign ministers meeting currently underway.

Wadephul emphasized the importance of achieving the 5% target advocated by President Trump, highlighting it as a necessary step supported by Germany during the meeting held in Turkey. This statement reflects Trump’s long-standing call for increased defense expenditure among NATO allies, some of whom have yet to meet the existing 2% target.

Additionally, Wadephul had a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the same event. Following their discussion, Wadephul commented on social media platform X, noting that their exchange was a promising beginning, particularly in a period where international relations face significant challenges. The situation remains dynamic, with updates expected as discussions progress.
