Greenland’s Prime Minister Nielsen Criticizes U.S. for Lack of Respect

The recent remarks by Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have highlighted tensions surrounding the United States’ interest in Greenland, a mineral-rich Arctic island. Nielsen condemned recent US comments as disrespectful, firmly stating that Greenland will never be a property that can be purchased by just anyone.

These statements followed a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at her official residence, marking the second day of Nielsen’s three-day official visit. The discourse was a direct response to US President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring control over the strategically significant territory.

During a press conference, Nielsen criticized the tone of the US discussions, emphasizing the need for unity in response to what he described as disrespectful language. His visit coincides with increased political activity in Greenland, where local parties have recently formed a coalition government advocating for eventual independence from Denmark, partly in reaction to Trump’s ambitions.

The Greenlandic government outlined that Nielsen’s visit, which began on Saturday, aims to strengthen future cooperation between Greenland and Denmark. Prime Minister Frederiksen reiterated Denmark’s commitment to investing in Greenlandic society, citing both historical ties and the shared commonwealth between the two nations.

On the final day of his visit, Nielsen is scheduled to meet with King Frederik X before returning to Greenland with Frederiksen for a royal visit. When questioned about the possibility of a meeting with President Trump, Frederiksen expressed openness to dialogue with the American president, while reaffirming the Danish commonwealth’s stance on the governance of its territories.

Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, navigating complex international interests and its aspirations for greater autonomy.
