Ian Smith, best known for his role as Harold Bishop on the iconic Australian soap opera Neighbours, has revealed he will be departing the show following a terminal cancer diagnosis.

The 86-year-old actor disclosed to Australia’s 10 News First that he has been diagnosed with pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer. In a candid statement, Smith shared, “I found out a few months back that I have cancer, that I have a very aggressive non-fixable cancer and they expect me to die.”

Despite the challenging prognosis, Smith conveyed a determination to maintain a quality life for as long as possible. He has undergone three treatments, one of which was immunotherapy, a relatively new medical intervention. “I’ve really put my hand up, I think just to be a guinea pig plus the fact I don’t want to die, I want to stay alive with quality as long as I can – and if they can do that, I’m very happy,” Smith expressed.

Smith has been a beloved fixture on Neighbours, first appearing in the series in 1987. Originally intended for only a few episodes, his character Harold Bishop became a central presence until 1991, returning in subsequent years for various stints. This year, Smith resumed his role as a regular character.

The news of Smith’s departure has been met with sadness from fans and the show’s producers alike. A message on the Neighbours X account highlighted the impact of his work: “We’re sharing the sad news that Ian Smith will soon be stepping away from the beloved role of Harold Bishop… Erinsborough won’t quite be the same again.”

In reflecting on his personal life, Smith also spoke about the loss of his wife Gail to cancer in 2019, a significant event that he believes greatly impacted his outlook. He remarked, “That, really, I think if that hadn’t happened, I’d be a lot worse off now – but my life finished then.” Despite enduring personal and health challenges, Smith expressed hope for a peaceful passing, having witnessed both good and bad deaths in his lifetime.

His portrayal of Harold Bishop has left a lasting impression, fondly remembered by fans, and his final scenes promise to be a fitting farewell.
