On Saturday, Israeli airstrikes devastated central Beirut, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and numerous injuries, highlighting the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Lebanon’s civil defense has reported that the death toll is provisional as emergency teams continue to sift through the debris in search of survivors. The recent violence marks the fourth strike on Beirut in less than a week, intensifying the already volatile situation in the region.
Diplomatic efforts are underway, with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein visiting the area in an attempt to mediate a cease-fire. This renewed push for peace comes on the heels of more than 13 months of escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which have escalated into war over the past two months.
According to the Lebanese health ministry, the ongoing Israeli bombardment has resulted in over 3,500 Lebanese fatalities and more than 15,000 injuries. In addition, around 1.2 million people, accounting for a quarter of Lebanon’s population, have been displaced owing to the conflict. The violence has also affected Israel, with approximately 90 soldiers and nearly 50 civilians killed by various attacks, including rockets and drones.
The airstrikes in Beirut occurred at 4 a.m. local time, leading to the demolition of an eight-story building and creating a large crater. Concurrently, a separate drone strike in the southern port city of Tyre resulted in the death of one individual and injured another, as reported by the state-run National News Agency. The victims in Tyre were identified as fishermen, seemingly teenagers, based on observations from an Associated Press journalist on-site.
Prior to these strikes, Israeli forces engaged in heavy bombardment of the southern suburbs of Beirut, while ground combat with Hezbollah militants took place in southern Lebanon. Despite the intensity of the conflict, Israel has not issued evacuation warnings for Beirut residents and has refrained from commenting on the recent strikes.
Saturday also saw continued violence in the Gaza Strip, where strikes killed at least six individuals, including three children. This part of the conflict has claimed over 44,000 lives, with the majority being women and children, according to local health officials. The Israeli military, however, maintains that over 17,000 militants have been killed without providing corroborating evidence.
The conflict’s roots can be traced back to October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched an attack on southern Israel, claiming around 1,200 lives and abducting 250 individuals. Approximately 100 hostages remain in Gaza, with a significant number feared dead. The Israeli offensive has caused widespread devastation in Gaza, leading to massive displacement and leaving many in dire conditions.
