In response to growing regional tensions, Japan has announced plans to send troops for joint training exercises with U.S. Marines and Australian forces in northern Australia. This collaborative military initiative underscores shared apprehensions about China’s increasingly assertive military behavior, according to defense officials from the participating nations.
The announcement was made following discussions in Darwin among the defense ministers of Japan, the United States, and Australia—Nakatani Gen, Lloyd Austin, and Richard Marles, respectively. These dialogues concluded with an agreement to commence trilateral amphibious training operations in 2025, which will begin with the Exercise Talisman Sabre in northern Australia.
Australia, breaking new ground, will also take part in the Exercise Orient Shield in Japan for the first time in the coming year. The joint statement by the ministers highlighted a deep-seated ‘serious concern’ regarding destabilizing activities in the East and South China seas. Incidents involving ‘dangerous conduct’ by Chinese military forces against vessels from the Philippines and other regional actors have been particularly alarming. This move by the three nations reflects their unified effort to counter growing pressures in these disputed waters.
The discussions also focused on the Taiwan Strait’s stability, emphasizing its importance for regional peace. China, which views Taiwan as a part of its territory, has notably increased military drills around the island, exacerbating regional tensions. The ministers reiterated the necessity for peace and stability in this crucial area.
Australia’s Defense Minister, Richard Marles, had previously indicated the intention to deepen military ties with Japan during talks in September, pointing to the potential benefits of Japan’s participation in U.S. Marine rotational activities in Australia. He described the joint training as a ‘fantastic opportunity’ for enhancing cooperation.
When questioned about potential friction this increased alliance might cause with Beijing, Marles emphasized the strategic aim of strengthening connections with ‘like-minded countries’ and reaffirming alliances with their ‘friends.’
This strategic military collaboration among Japan, the U.S., and Australia represents a proactive step towards ensuring regional stability amid rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific.
