A three-day ceasefire has been declared by the Kremlin in Ukraine from May 8 to May 10, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. The truce is set to begin at midnight local time on May 8, which corresponds to 11 pm CEST on May 7.
The Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has mandated a complete cessation of hostilities for Victory Day on humanitarian grounds. This development emerges amid intensified diplomatic efforts by US President Donald Trump to negotiate a peace agreement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now entering its fourth year.
Despite the ceasefire announcement, Putin has not agreed to a permanent and unconditional ceasefire. He has tied such an agreement to the cessation of Western arms supplies to Ukraine and the halting of Ukraine’s mobilization efforts.
