Landslide in La Paz Destructive Rains Cause Havoc

In La Paz, Bolivia, heavy rains triggered a catastrophic landslide, uprooting communities and prompting urgent rescue operations early Sunday. A young girl remains missing, and numerous homes have been obliterated as local authorities grapple with the unfolding crisis.

Torrential rainfall on Saturday led to the overflow of the Pasajahuira River, sending torrents of mud and debris into southwestern neighborhoods of La Paz. This devastating flow of rocks and soil impacted dozens of homes, leading to the destruction of about two dozen and the flooding of another 40. Local officials confirmed that the affected area, characterized by poorly constructed houses, was ill-prepared for such an event.

The deputy civil defense minister, Juan Carlos Calvimontes, reported on the ground conditions, emphasizing the magnitude of the destruction. Luis Mencias, an auto mechanic, expressed his sorrow, stating, “I lost my workshop and the cars that I had there are buried,” highlighting the personal toll of the disaster.

Rescue teams continue their search for a missing 5-year-old girl in the Bajo Llojeta neighborhood, where mud has displaced families. The girl’s father, Grover Mendoza, recounted that his daughter disappeared when the mudslide hit, leaving the community in distress.

Mayor Iván Arias criticized the construction practices on the hillsides, citing that homes built without proper permits contributed to instability. He called out the ‘irresponsible’ planning that has endangered residents living in lower-lying areas.

Bolivian President Luis Arce, upon visiting the affected site, assured citizens of an investigation into illegal constructions and extended support to those displaced by the flood. He acknowledged the shock and damage, insisting that the situation demands accountability.

Given La Paz’s geographic location in a valley surrounded by steep hills, it is predisposed to such natural calamities. This landslide marks an acute beginning to Bolivia’s rainy season, following one of the harshest droughts in recent memory.

As rescue teams work tirelessly amidst challenging conditions, the situation in La Paz highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure and regulation. This tragic event not only underscores the importance of disaster preparedness but also raises critical questions about urban planning and accountability.
