In Beirut, a massive gathering unfolded as mourners filled the streets and stadium to pay their final respects to Hassan Nasrallah, the late leader of Hezbollah, following his death in an Israeli airstrike nearly five months ago.

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, Beirut witnessed a significant outpouring of grief as hundreds of thousands attended the funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, the former leader of Hezbollah, and his cousin and successor, Hashem Safieddine. The ceremony took place at the Sports City Stadium, where emotions ran high as a trailer carrying the coffins made its way through the crowded venue.

The mourners, many of whom hold Nasrallah in high regard due to his leadership against Israeli forces, lined the path of the procession. Participants were seen reaching out for flowers thrown from the platforms and throwing scarves and garments onto the coffins, hoping to bless them through contact. This turnout reflected the deep emotional and psychological impact Nasrallah’s death has had on the Shiite community in Lebanon, especially those in the southern and eastern regions, and Beirut’s southern suburbs.

For many supporters, Nasrallah symbolized resilience and strength. He played a pivotal role in the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon in 2000 and led Hezbollah through the 2006 war against Israel, a conflict that ended in a stalemate. Therefore, his loss is particularly profound for the community that viewed him as a hero.

The event also served as a demonstration of Hezbollah’s continued influence, with throngs of supporters chanting slogans and conveying their fervent support. Furthermore, Israeli fighter jets made low passes over the city during the procession, prompting defiant chants in response from the gathered crowd.

The funeral not only marked a solemn farewell but also a significant event for Hezbollah to show its enduring base of support despite the challenges it faces. The presence of Safieddine’s coffin alongside Nasrallah’s underscored the ongoing legacy of leadership within the group.

Hassan Nasrallah’s funeral brought together a significant segment of the Lebanese population, illustrating deep-rooted loyalty and respect for his leadership. The event underscored the enduring influence of Hezbollah in Lebanon, despite recent adversities, and marked a somber yet powerful moment in the group’s history.
