In a recent development, Pakistan has openly criticized the United States’ decision to impose new sanctions on its ballistic missile program, labeling them as ‘discriminatory.’
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry expressed strong disapproval of the US sanctions, suggesting they pose significant threats to the peace and security of the region. The ministry contended that such measures have dangerous implications for the strategic stability beyond just South Asia. Additionally, the allegations of weapons proliferation against certain Pakistani businesses were challenged by Pakistan, asserting these were based on suspicions and lacked concrete evidence.
The US sanctions target specific businesses allegedly involved in the development of Pakistan’s long-range ballistic missile capabilities, such as the sophisticated SHAHEEN series. These measures include freezing their US-based assets and prohibiting American entities from engaging in business with them. Among the entities affected are the Islamabad-based National Development Complex and several others, namely Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, Affiliates International, and Rockside Enterprise.
US State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, reiterated America’s ongoing concerns regarding weapons proliferation. He emphasized the need for continued engagement with Pakistan to address these issues constructively. Despite this, the sanctions have been met with resistance within Pakistan, notably from the political party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. His spokesperson, Zulfiqar Bukhari, criticized the US administration for the sanctions, specifically targeting the National Development Complex and associated commercial entities.
Analysts suggest that Pakistan’s missile program primarily aims to counter threats from its neighbor India, with whom it has had a turbulent history. This includes becoming a declared nuclear power in 1998, following nuclear tests by India. Kashmir, a heavily disputed region, remains a core point of contention between the two countries, leading to multiple conflicts since independence from Britain.
Security expert Syed Muhammad Ali condemned the US sanctions as “short-sighted and destabilizing,” arguing that they ignore the strategic realities of South Asia. The sanctions imply double standards, given the US has waived licensing requirements for advanced military technology to other nations.
