The United States may soon reconsider its pursuit of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine if significant progress is not achieved in the coming days. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in Paris after extensive discussions with Ukrainian and European officials, indicated that although the talks had been constructive, there is an urgent need to evaluate the feasibility of a peace deal.
French authorities have announced that another round of talks in the same format is planned for London shortly. Rubio expressed his intention to participate in this upcoming meeting. He emphasized that the current situation demands a critical assessment of whether a peace agreement is attainable, highlighting the need for a decision within days concerning the potential for progress in the subsequent weeks.
Efforts led by the Trump administration to mediate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine have thus far been unsuccessful in halting the hostilities. The recent high-level discussions in France marked the first such meeting since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, where top officials from the United States, Ukraine, and Europe convened to address the ongoing conflict and Ukraine’s future security.
This diplomatic initiative comes amid growing European concerns over President Trump’s apparent willingness to strengthen ties with Russia. Secretary Rubio, along with presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, has been at the forefront of the United States’ efforts to secure peace. Multiple negotiation rounds have taken place in Saudi Arabia, and Witkoff has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on three occasions, according to Rubio.
Despite these diplomatic endeavors, Moscow has consistently refused to agree to a comprehensive ceasefire, an initiative strongly supported by both Trump and Ukraine. Russia’s conditions for a ceasefire include halting Ukraine’s mobilization efforts and Western arms supplies, demands that Ukraine has firmly rejected.
