In a violent incident that shook Pakistan’s Kurram district, six security personnel lost their lives, and seven others were wounded following an attack on a checkpoint, a police official reported Saturday.

The assault occurred in Kurram district in northwest Pakistan, an area recently plagued by sectarian violence that has claimed at least 130 lives in the past few weeks. Although a ceasefire between Sunni and Shiite communities is currently in place, Saturday’s attack was not related to the previous clashes, according to local official Saleem Khan.

The attack targeted a Frontier Corps checkpoint in Bagam, situated approximately 200 kilometers south of Peshawar city. The injured were transported to a military hospital for treatment. At this time, no group has claimed responsibility for the assault.

On the same day, operations in the Tank district resulted in the death of 20 militants, including a commander, over the last 24 hours. An intelligence official, who spoke under anonymity due to lack of authorization, confirmed that the deceased militants had been implicated in attacks on security forces as well as actions of extortion and targeted civilian killings.

Both Kurram and Tank districts are located within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which shares a border with Afghanistan. This region has seen heightened tensions and frequent security operations due to the presence of militant groups such as the Pakistani Taliban.

The recent violent events in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa underscore the ongoing security challenges in the region. Efforts continue to stabilize and secure these areas, amidst a backdrop of complex sectarian and militant dynamics.
