MADRID – A ski lift collapsed at a resort in Aragon, Spain, on Saturday, injuring dozens, with nine individuals sustaining serious injuries and eight others in critical condition, according to the regional government.
Approximately 80 people are still trapped in the chairlift at the Astun ski resort in Huesca province, as reported by state TV channel TVE.
“It was as if a cable snapped; the chairs bounced, and people were thrown off,” a witness recounted to TVE.
The cause of the cable malfunction is currently unknown.
The ski resort’s management chose not to comment and could not confirm if any foreigners were among the injured.
Rescue operations are underway, with several helicopters deployed to help those still stranded on the chairlift and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Astun ski resort, primarily frequented by Spanish skiers, is situated near the French border in the Pyrenees mountain range.
