In a recent incident that sparked widespread outrage, a US influencer, Sam Jones, found herself at the center of a controversy after posting a video on Instagram showing her picking up a baby wombat in Australia. The act, recorded during the night on a remote road, drew condemnation from both the public and Australian authorities, leading to an investigation and potential deportation threats.

Jones, also known as Samantha Strable, took to social media to clarify her actions, stating, “I ran, not to snatch the baby from its mother, but out of fear that she might attack me.” According to Jones, her intentions were driven by concern for the animal’s safety as she encountered the wombats motionless on the road. Frequently, wombats fall victim to collisions with vehicles in Australia, which prompted her to ensure the animals’ safety.

In her defense, Jones described the situation as a hasty decision made out of worry that the baby wombat might be unwell or injured. However, the video capturing the incident also showed an unidentified man laughing, and remarks were made about the mother’s aggressive noises. Animal welfare experts, analyzing the video, indicated that the way Jones handled the baby wombat might have caused harm, particularly as it was seen hanging by its front legs.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeled the footage “an outrage,” and the country’s Minister of Home Affairs, Tony Burke, announced an investigation into a possible visa condition breach by Jones before she opted to leave Australia. Burke mentioned, “There has never been a better day to be a baby wombat in Australia” after Jones departed voluntarily and expressed doubt she would seek another Australian visa.

Jones, residing in Montana, expressed her initial intent was to prevent the wombats from potential danger on the road. As she approached, the young wombat did not flee, raising her concerns about its health, leading to her decision to pick it up. She stated, “I have thought deeply about this situation and realized I did not handle it in the best possible way.” Despite her intentions, experts pointed out that the video revealed the young wombat exhibited signs of mange and would likely die without treatment.

After returning the wombat to its mother, Jones ensured they moved away from the road. She expressed her regrets, saying, “I have learned from this situation and sincerely apologize for the distress I have caused.” However, she did not respond to inquiries regarding the specific timing and location of the incident, nor her whereabouts during the release of the statement.

The controversy surrounding Sam Jones’s actions underscores the complex responsibilities influencers face when interacting with wildlife. Despite Jones’s public apology and reflection on her actions, the incident serves as a reminder of the potential repercussions of impulsive decisions in sensitive environments.
