Florida Approves $318 Million in Land Preservation Deals

In a significant move to safeguard Florida’s natural landscapes, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet have sanctioned land deals totaling $318 million, aimed at protecting 86,819 acres across the state.

The recent approval encompasses a series of land acquisitions and conservation easements intended to limit development on agricultural lands. These measures are pivotal in ensuring the preservation of vital green spaces, wildlife habitats, and agricultural roots of the state. Julie Morris, the executive director of the Florida Conservation Group, highlighted the urgency of these actions, quoting, ‘We have a short window of time to do this, as development rapidly encroaches in rural areas.’

A portion of the $318 million expenditure includes $8.39 million dedicated specifically to acquiring 2,483 acres in central Walton County. This land is slated to host a new state park and function as a buffer zone for Eglin Air Force Base, thus serving dual purposes of recreation and national security.

The Florida Forever conservation program contributes a substantial $111.24 million for the acquisition of seven parcels covering 24,153 acres. Of these transactions, five involve direct land purchases while two focus on establishing conservation easements. These easements allow landowners to continue agricultural operations while protecting the land from urban development threats.

The most significant purchase under the Florida Forever initiative involves $32.65 million for 12,243 acres from Bear Creek Timber LLC, located approximately six miles north of Tyndall Air Force Base in Bay County.

Furthermore, the Cabinet has sanctioned $206.85 million under the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program. This funding will secure 13 conservation easements covering 62,666 acres spread across 10 counties. One of the largest easement deals includes the Bull Hammock Ranch in Martin County, with the state investing $50.105 million to protect 5,875 acres from mounting development pressures.

These strategic land purchases and easements demonstrate Florida’s commitment to conservation amidst increasing development pressures. By securing these lands, the state aims to ensure the preservation of its natural resources and agricultural heritage for future generations.
