In Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, the Rubell Museum stands as a beacon of contemporary art, housing an impressive collection amassed over decades.
Don and Mera Rubell embarked on their journey of acquiring contemporary art in 1965. Over the years, they have collected nearly 7,200 works by more than 1,000 artists, creating a remarkable compilation of modern masterpieces. This collection features iconic pieces from renowned artists such as Basquiat, Warhol, Koons, and Sherman.
Originally, the Rubells displayed their collection in a gallery located in Wynwood, a venture that lasted over 26 years. However, as their collection grew, they sought a larger space to showcase their extensive array of art. Thus, a former warehouse in Allapattah was transformed into the current Rubell Museum, offering a vast 53,000 square feet for exhibitions.
The museum not only serves as a public exhibition space but also actively engages with the community. It hosts school partnerships and curatorial training programs, fostering educational opportunities for aspiring artists and curators.
The Rubell Museum is open to visitors from Sunday to Thursday, with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays, providing ample time for art enthusiasts to explore its vast collection. The museum’s location on NW 23 Street makes it an accessible cultural landmark in Miami.
