Peacock Park overlooks Biscayne Bay and has a long history dating back to 1883. It was originally home to the Bay View Inn, the first hotel in the area. Renamed the Peacock Inn by owners Charles and Isabella Peacock, it became a center for local gatherings in Miami. In 1973, the park was renamed in honor of the couple’s contributions to the community.
In the late 1870s, the first black community on the South Florida mainland was established in the area. Residents came primarily from the Bahamas to work at the Peacock Inn and brought invaluable knowledge of tropical plants, agriculture and construction to the development of Coconut Grove.
