In a strategic move to combat escalating violence, approximately 150 military police officers from Central America have commenced operations in Haiti.
In recent developments, Haiti has received a contingent of military police, primarily from Guatemala, to assist the Haitian government in reestablishing stability amid increasing gang-related activities. This deployment was announced following an arrival ceremony at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, where the officers were met by Godfrey Otunge, the mission’s Kenyan commander.
The mission, backed by the United Nations, aims to quell the rampant violence that has disrupted the lives of millions in Haiti. Godfrey Otunge addressed the press directly during the ceremony, stating, “The gangs have only two choices: surrender, lay down their weapons, and face justice, or face us in the field.” His remark underscored the mission’s firm stance against gang violence and its commitment to restoring order.
The Guatemalan forces, along with a small number of personnel from El Salvador, were transported to Haiti in a U.S. Air Force aircraft and welcomed by prominent figures like U.S. Ambassador Dennis Hankins. The presence of these forces signifies a crucial phase in the ongoing struggle against gangs, which reportedly control about 85% of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The situation in Haiti has deteriorated since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Coordinated assaults on key infrastructures, such as prisons and the international airport, highlight the gangs’ influence. A particularly shocking incident occurred on Christmas Eve, as gunmen attacked a gathering celebrating the reopening of Haiti’s largest public hospital, resulting in multiple casualties, including two journalists and a police officer.
Previously, efforts to stabilize the region were led by approximately 400 security personnel from Kenya. Although additional reinforcements are expected from countries like the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, and Chad, their deployment dates remain unconfirmed.
