Syracuse Outperforms Washington State in Holiday Bowl Battle

In a standout performance at the Holiday Bowl, Syracuse’s Kyle McCord shattered records as he threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns, steering No. 22 Syracuse to a dominant 52-35 victory against a resilient Washington State.

McCord’s impressive feat included breaking Deshaun Watson’s Atlantic Coast Conference season passing record. Entering the game with 4,326 yards, he needed just 268 more to surpass Watson’s 4,593 yards achieved in 2016. A 50-yard pass to Darrell Gill Jr. early in the second half secured this milestone for McCord, who concluded with 4,779 yards for the season.

The game was marked by an energetic start from Washington State, who managed to lead 21-14 late in the first quarter following a 66-yard touchdown from Kyle Williams and a blocked punt by Leon Neal Jr., returned for a score by Josh Meredith. However, Syracuse regained control with three second-quarter touchdowns, establishing a lead that Washington State couldn’t overcome.

LeQuint Allen contributed significantly to Syracuse’s win, rushing for 120 yards and scoring two touchdowns, marking his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. The team’s offense was further bolstered by players like Darrell Gill Jr., who amassed 145 yards from just four receptions, and Jackson Meeks, with 110 yards from five catches. Meanwhile, Trebor Pena and Oronde Gadsden II each added two touchdown catches.

Despite the loss, Washington State demonstrated remarkable spirit, given their challenges. The team’s interim leadership faced numerous obstacles, including the departure of key staff and over 20 players entering the transfer portal. Zevi Eckhaus, stepping up as quarterback, delivered a commendable performance with 363 yards and three touchdowns. Notably, Kyle Williams set a new Holiday Bowl record with 172 receiving yards.

Both teams now turn their eyes to upcoming challenges. Syracuse is set to face Tennessee for their opening game of the 2025 season, while Washington State will embark on their new season against Idaho, amid ongoing efforts to solidify their coaching staff.

Syracuse’s commanding performance in the Holiday Bowl highlights the team’s resilience and prowess on the field, while Washington State’s spirited display, despite significant adversities, underscores the unpredictability and excitement characteristic of college football.
